31st Annual Skiing Tournament in White Mountain

I was asked to be the coach/chaperon for a skier while she competes in White Mountain at the regional tournament. It was a great trip with many enthusiastic skiers having fun on the slopes. I have never been to a skiing competition and have not been that interested in skiing before, but after this weekend I am going to start! It looked like so much fun.

Another reason why it was such a great trip was that I was able to see our new apartment (yes, it's brand new as the school was newly built along with teacher housing in 2008). I will post some pictures later this weekend. It is a beautiful place, where Clint and I will have a lot of fun playing out in the snow, hunting, fishing, berry picking, and just loving the outdoors.

I also met a lot of wonderful people from White Mountain, and I think this move will be really welcoming.

Gambell to White Mountain

Although we have loved being here in Gambell, we are transferring to White Mountain for the 2009-2010 school year. The school, community, and environment here in Gambell has provided us with a very pleasant experience and one that we will cherish forever. The transfer to White Mountain has nothing to do with Gambell, but is due to the lack of outdoor activities that Clint and I would like to do in our free time. We are VERY excited for this move, and are happy that we are going to stay with the BSSD district. It's going to be an adventure. Just to give you guys an idea of what it's going to be like for us I added a video that was made by Bill Bryson. Look at the prettiness!

Things I'm missing...

There are a couple, okay, quite a few things that I have been missing since moving up here to 'bush' Alaska. Here are a few:
  • Sitting around talking to my mom and sisters being completely confused in our conversations
  • The boat harbor and going on day trips to catch our dinner
  • The vibrant colors of fresh fruits and vegetables
  • The smell of a coffee shop
  • The smell of trees and dirt
  • The smell of low tide on a misty summer day
  • And believe it or not, traffic lights! Even though Ketchikan has a total of 3 traffic lights, I miss 'em
Of course there are MANY things that I miss about home, but being up here has made me realize and appreciate all the little things that make life, well, life.

Spring?

As things start to dwindle down and get a little calmer, the calendar shows that it's one day until it is 'officially Spring'. Here in Gambell however, we are not experiencing the wonders of Spring with the hints of green peeking out. Here, it's all white! Everywhere you look. The warm weather with all the lovely colors seem far...far...away. BUT, there are still beautiful sights to see as the ice is breaking and flowing towards the vast ocean.

Clint and I literally rushed outside before it got too windy or too cold outside and went for a little walk...
Proof to show that it's still really, really cold outside. Clint took this picture when I was looking at the scenery...
Honestly though, it IS getting a little bit better. It's getting a tiny bit warmer, and stays light out later, but still. No real 'sign' of spring yet.
Hope you are staying warm =)
